Cheerio’s Class

Ages:  4 yrs – 6 yrs.

This class is for young children that are excited about cheerleading. The class includes basic stunting technique, tumbling, cheer motions, voice projection, and jumps. Let us channel all of your child's energy and enthusiasm into learning the building blocks to being a great cheerleader.

Our mission at Palmetto Athletic Center is to provide for all children a program that will enhance their mental, physical, and spiritual well being in a Christian environment.

I would like to tell you a little about the curriculum that we have designed for your daughters this ten weeks.  The goal of the cheerleading class will be to teach the basics of cheerleading and tumbling.  We will start by getting the girls familiar with phrases that are used in cheerleading and tumbling.  We will train body awareness each week with body tightening drills.  We will also have some fun by adding in motivational games and fun time.

The class will be one hour of cheer and tumbling instruction.  We will start by stretching the body “the cheerleading way” for ten minutes each day.  The stretches will train the body to conform to tumbling skills and cheerleading motions and jumps.  The bulk of the class will focus on basic tumbling skills.  The class breaks down to ten minute stretch, ten minutes on basic stunting technique, twenty minutes on tumbling, ten minutes on motions, voice projection, jumps, and five minutes of fun time.

The main skill in the cheerleading program is the Back handspring (BHS).  We will begin the ten weeks learning the body positions and phases of the BHS.  Our goal is to provide a strong understanding and foundation for all tumbling skills.  Each week we will build onto the phase that we learned the previous week and before you know it the girls will be doing the BHS!

The tumbling portion of the class will be broken down into three categories:  trampoline, standing tumbling, running tumbling.  The first couple of weeks the trampoline time will be devoted to cheerleading jumps (toe-touches, hurkie, pike, ect.).  Standing tumbling will be devoted to the basics of the BHS.  Running tumbling will be devoted to cartwheels and round-offs.

At the end of the ten weeks your daughter will be evaluated.  This class is meant to be a prerequisite for your daughter to do several things.  The options at the end of the ten weeks will include trying out to join the Twisters Exhibition team, entering into an intermediate tumbling class at Palmetto Athletic Center, or returning to the cheerleading class for another year.  The evaluation will be based on age, tumbling ability, cheerleading ability, and the goals of each family.
